First notice of loss
and a VP of Product
At Beam I sped up claims decisions from hours to seconds. Here's what I'd build next.
Phil Morehead, VP of Product candidate
Work the five claims below. The agent drafts. You decide. Then let's talk.
The agent drafts in seconds. The adjuster decides. Denials always go to a person.
Nothing filed yet. Pick a claim and decide.
Schedule B: graded against 50 claims
Fifty synthetic claims, each with an answer key routed the way a senior adjuster would. The agent saw the same trip data and statements. It had to match the key. It was never allowed to deny.
Hail damage filed as a collision. The agent sent it to fast track.
Fix: add weather data to the draft, so a storm shows up before the route does.
Two cars from one household in the same staged crash. The agent didn't connect them.
Fix: cross check every party against the policy household before routing.
A night shift nurse got flagged for phone use. The phone was docked and running navigation.
Fix: read mount and navigation state before anything counts as distraction.
The test set is synthetic. On day one I'd rebuild it on real closed claims with your claims team.
Supplement C: a comparable prior loss
| Part | Then: Beam Dental, 2019 to 2020 | Next: a telematics carrier |
|---|---|---|
| The signal | A connected toothbrush logged brushing habits. | A phone logs speed, braking and distraction. |
| The price | Better habits earned better dental benefits pricing. | Safer driving earns a lower bill. |
| The claim | Processors decided with the right data in front of them. Hours to seconds. | The agent drafts from trip data. The adjuster decides in one look. |
| The lesson | Speed came from the decision point, not more staff. | Put AI at the decision point. Keep a person on the call. |
I was the Senior Product Manager. I shipped the adjudication and workflow tool. It put the right claim data in front of processors at decision time. Claims processing went from hours to seconds. I also launched partner onboarding with employee benefits platforms, a new channel worth about $250K a year.
Same model, different device. Behavior data in, price and claims out.
Part D: the first 90 days
- Ride along with claims, underwriting and actuarial.
- Map the portfolio: what serves State Farm, what serves HiRoad, what serves both.
- Find where AI already runs today.
Hold me to: a one page portfolio map and the rules for what we fund, signed off by the exec team.
- One operating model for every team, from discovery to launch.
- A success metric set before every launch.
- Pick one claims pilot with claims and compliance, eval bar agreed up front.
Hold me to: every team on one cadence and a pilot eval bar claims leadership signed.
- Run the pilot with real adjusters in one state. The agent drafts. People decide.
- Measure against today's baseline.
- Tie the roadmap to State Farm and HiRoad outcomes.
Hold me to: a pilot readout with numbers and a clear go or kill call.
Part E: questions for the hiring team
Which claims decisions take your adjusters the longest today, and why?
Where does State Farm want this platform to carry more of the load in the next two years?
How do product, underwriting and actuarial decide what ships today?
What would make an AI pilot in claims a clear win, or a clear kill?
Where has HiRoad's driving data surprised you?
What does a great first year look like for this role?
Part F: applicant record and signature
- Built NTT Data's first product org. Moved 45+ client accounts to product, outcomes and design in 12 months. Launches got about 50% faster. Led a 60+ person org.
- Shipped HCA's patient intake app across 36 hospitals. Built on Epic and Meditech records. 745K monthly users. Intake cut from 15 minutes to 2.
- Took AI to production for a global footwear brand. Stockouts down 37%, sales up 20% on popular drops.
- Claims at Beam Dental. The adjudication tool in Supplement C.
- Now at Sparq, leading AI offers and pricing the deals behind them.
No P&C tenure.
I worked insurtech claims at Beam, not auto. I close gaps like that by sitting next to the people who do the work. Expect me on ride alongs with your adjusters in month one.
